The NI GPIB-140A is a National Instruments fiber-optic GPIB bus extender designed to connect two physically separate IEEE 488 systems over distances of up to 1 km. It provides transparent GPIB communication across a point-to-point optical link, allowing existing instrumentation software and GPIB control programs to operate without application modifications. The unit supports IEEE 488.1 and IEEE 488.2 operation and can use NI HS488 for higher-speed transfers. In buffered mode, the extension supports transfer rates above 1.1 MB/s, while HS488 operation can exceed 2.8 MB/s. The architecture also increases the total device loading capability of an extended GPIB system to as many as 28 devices, including the extenders. NI identifies the GPIB-140A as discontinued, with the GPIB-140B recommended as its successor for supported legacy applications.

Install the extender in a dry indoor environment within the specified temperature and humidity range. Use shielded GPIB cabling and the correct T7 fiber-optic cable, with both extenders configured consistently for the selected transfer mode. NI specifies a point-to-point optical architecture rather than a conventional multidrop fiber network.
During maintenance, inspect the GPIB connector, ST fiber connectors, optical cable ends, power input, and status indicators. Keep fiber interfaces clean; contamination at the optical connection can cause intermittent communication or reduced link performance.
Product Warranty — GPIB-140A
Warranty depends on supplier condition and sales terms. Because NI lists the GPIB-140A as no longer available, verify whether a replacement unit is new old stock, refurbished, or used, and request functional-test records and traceability where available. NI identifies the GPIB-140B as the recommended replacement for the 140A family.
For legacy automated test equipment, the NI GPIB-140A remains a practical spare where the existing fiber architecture and system configuration must be preserved.
